Cancellation fees - FAQs



We believe in being upfront and clear about any fee that could be payable during your policy term.  The fees, charges and terms below are in addition to any that are set by your insurer and the premium finance provider that we use.

1. What are your fees and charges for cancelling my car insurance policy within the 14 day cooling off period?

Provided your Model Driver Black Box has not been installed in your car, we charge £30.00 for cancelling your car insurance policy within the 14 day cooling off period. This is in addition to the charge for the period of cover provided Additional charges may also be applied by your insurer so please check their policy wording for details. If a claim has been made within the 14 day cooling off period then the full premium is due.

2. Will I get a full refund if I cancel my car insurance policy within the 14 day cooling off period?

If you cancel your car insurance policy within the 14 day cooling off period, you will receive a refund after the deduction of our cancellation charge, the cost for any cover provided and any fee charged by the insurer. If however, a claim has been made within the 14 day cooling off period, the full premium is due.

3. What are your fees and charges for cancelling my Optional Extra(s) within the 14 day cooling off period?

We do not apply an additional charge for cancelling any Optional Extras (including Car Hire Cover, Personal Injury Cover, Breakdown Assistance Cover and Motoring Legal Protection) within the 14 day cooling of period, subject to there being no claims on the policies.  If there has been a claim, no refund will be payable.

4. Will I get a full refund if I cancel my Optional Extra(s) within the 14 day cooling off period?

You will receive a full refund, subject to there being no claims on the policies. If there has been a claim, no refund will be payable.

5. What are your fees and charges for cancelling my car insurance policy after the 14 day cooling off period?

Provided your Model Driver Black Box has not been installed in your car, we charge £65.  If your Model Driver Black Box has been fitted, our cancellation charge is £150.  This is in addition to a charge for the period of time we have provided cover. 

Please note: If any claim has been made then the full premium is due. Additional charges may be applied by your insurer so please check their policy documentation for details.

6. Will I get a full refund if I cancel my car insurance policy after the 14 day cooling off period?

If you cancel your car insurance policy after the 14 day cooling off period, your refund will be calculated dependent on the length of time your policy has been running for, less any cancellation charges that we and your insurer apply. Additionally, if a claim has been made within this period, the full premium is due.

7. What are your fees and charges for cancelling my Optional Extra(s) after the 14 day cooling off period?

For Breakdown Assistance Cover, a refund will be calculated dependent on the length of time your policy has been running for, less the cancellation charge.  No refund is given for the cancellation of other Optional Extras after the 14 day cooling off period. Please note: If any claim has been made then the full premium is due. We do not charge a fee to cancel your Optional Extra(s).

8. In what instances can Model Driver cancel my policy?

We will cancel your policy in the following circumstances:

  • If your Model Driver Black Box is not installed within the agreed timeframe: at least 14 days but no longer than 28 days after you buy the policy
  • If we are alerted to a third excessive speeding incident
  • If we identify that you have made a false claim or failed to answer any questions we ask you accurately and honestly or if you have committed fraud
  • If you fail to make a direct debit payment if paying by monthly instalments
  • If we are requested to cancel your policy by the insurer that underwrites your policy

Under the Road Traffic Act, you are entitled to 7 days written notice at your last known address notified to us.
